Your privacy, further protected: Onerep expands coverage to non-public data brokers
Previously focusing on people-search sites, Onerep is making privacy protection more comprehensive by adding 559 non-public data brokers to its removal list. Now, you can address not only the websites that display your personal information publicly, but also the companies that collect it behind the scenes and supply people-search sites, marketers, and other third parties.
Non-public data brokers vs. people-search sites
Though both collect personal information from a variety of sources and compile it into profiles, there’s a major difference in who they share that information with and how they use it.
People-search websites make your data accessible to virtually anyone online. In many cases, sensitive details like your home address, age, relatives, and phone numbers are available for free. More in-depth information, like legal records, property records, and professional licences, may require a fee or a subscription, but the cost is typically relatively low.
Non-public data brokers, on the other hand, usually operate behind the scenes and aren’t accessible to the general public. Instead of publishing profiles for anyone to view, they share consumer data with businesses, advertisers, marketers, and other third parties. At the same time, the information they collect goes beyond what’s typically found on people-search sites and may include inferred interests, purchasing behavior, income estimates, demographic details, and more.
Why opt out of non-public data brokers?
Even though non-public data brokers don’t display your information openly online, they still play a major role in how personal data circulates behind the scenes.
Opting out of non-public data brokers can help minimize:
- targeted advertising and profiling,
- unwanted marketing outreach and spam,
- excessive data sharing across companies,
- the risk of your information resurfacing on other platforms,
- and your overall digital footprint.
While it’s impossible to erase every trace of personal data from the Internet, opting out of both people-search sites and non-public data brokers is an important step toward gaining more control over how your information is shared and used.
